Question: can a standard RAMPS 1.4 board be modified/hacked so that it can be used with an Arduino Due? Has anybody compiled a detailed list of changes or a HOWTO for doing that? Thanks for any pointers!

Answering my own question, yes. The basic hacks to get a functioning RAMPS 1.4 on a Due are actually quite simple. I'll create a page in the wiki specifically for the hacks, as soon as I am done modifying mine.
