Talk:Build A RepRap
Why are there restrictions on this page? It needs updating. It's still recommending the first iteration of the Prusa Mendel despite it being succeeded by two iterations. The name and picture need updating to reflect the Prusa i3.
- First, it's good practice to add a signature ( Button) to discussion entries. Seconds, recommendations are a tricky matter. What's perfect for one, is nonsense for others. Popular models are not neccessarily good ones for beginners.
- If you think you have a better choice, please open a copy of the page in your personal area and suggest this as a replacement. Thanks. --Traumflug (talk) 04:09, 15 December 2013 (PST)
Linking to RepRap_Options would be nice, as I had no idea about most designs when I first visited this page, and was misguided into thinking that these were all the functional designs ;) Is this OK to do? --ArchimedesPi (talk)
Actually I have to say I agree with the first remark above. The problem is that if one begins browsing this website from the main page, there is a link to this page recommending it as a good place to start choosing a design for a DIY Reprap, and the fact is that at the end of 2014, practically all the designs on this page are superseded. Well, actually the whole world of 3D printer development has been evolving so fast lately that even the Prusa i3 "vanilla" is beginning to look dated, compared to some of its newer variants.
Otoh I agree with Traumflug in the sense that it is difficult to recommend any particular design, as people have different tastes and different skill levels. There is no "one size fits all" here!
Despite all that I have two recommendations that I am presenting for discussion here:
- For the first time builder: buy a kit for one of the Prusa i3 variants (I am very partial to the P3Steel, which is available as a kit from a number of sources here in Spain). This is a great way to get started with 3D printing and learn a lot about the various fascinating technologies in the domain of 3D printing.
- The various Delta-style printers are very interesting from a Reprap point of view and worth a look for the more mechanically skilled and development oriented builders.
All the above strictly my humble opinion, not claiming otherwise and YMMV.
