Something-amazing.jpg

An item that is amazing/beautiful

This is a showerhead printed by 3D printer. This is one of the best way to use printer. We have lots of problem about some parts of mechine broken and we cannot buy them because of some reasons. In this case, the 3D printer will help us address this kind of problem. Nowadays, the 3D printer product are still constrained by many factors for example the temperature. However I blieve in the future, the 3D printer product will 100% perform like the original one. Every family will have a 3D printer and everyone know how to use it and fix it. This is why I want to take this course. Source

Something-fun.jpg

An item that is funny

I chose this design because it is so funny. This toys are just like the turtle cars I played on Mario Car. I barely found any toys like that at store. If I can use what I learned in class to print the things I like, it will be cool! Source

Something-useless.jpg

An item that is useless

This object is called the Tea Set. I think it designed for kids as toys. It looks good but I do not think children like the tea set to be their toys. Usually the old people like the Tea Set however the old people do not like children toys. I think this design is not well. Source

Something-useful.jpg

An item that is useful

I really like this idea. In US, people are willing to bring their own toothbrush for traveling. Additional, some of the hotels are not providing toothbrush. In this situtaion, people want a box for their toothbrush for the cleanness. If any supermarke sell this toothbrush box, I will buy it. If I can print one by myself with a special outlooking, it will be awesome. Source

Something-surprising.jpg

An item that is surprising to me

I did not realize the 3D printer can print a object detailed. I am doing a reasearch about the human brain injury and we need the brain model. I hope how I will learn this class could help me in my research. Source

The New Yorker on the OSE project

A) In my opinion, I think the Open Source Ecology project is too idealism. This idea is very useful towards the people who are living in the undeveloped society and this idea could help them to have a better life with costing less money. Due to Martin experience, he hope people could DIY the much cheaper more durable machines. This idea is good and I hold the opinion that people could do that future but not in a short term. Because the most undeveloped areas do not have enough technology to support this idea; and what’s more, Martin did not mentioned the safety constrain in his presentation. People who are going to use these open source blueprints usually do not have enough knowledge to help them found the problem. The safety problem will be the critical issue which will hurt those people.

B) The author thought the OSE project is not unrealistic. In New Yorker Magazine, Emily criticizes many issues of the OSE project. The author Emily thinks Martin’s blueprint is too idealism and he always use passion to solve problems. Emily uses everything she found from Martin’s ethnic background, including the blue jeans he wear and even his personality. This article bushed on Martin’s goal. Jakubowski wrote up a response towards this article on his wiki. In this response, he illustrated some misunderstanding which are mentioned by the articles.

C) I think many clubs at Penn State may be interested in the OSE project for example Thon and 3D printing club. Some of the professors who are teaching junior design class may also be interested in it. They may want to students to create their own machine.

Blog Three

A) Who created this design and when/where was it done? The Robohand design was created by Ivan Owen and Richard Van As and the first prototype was created in November 2012. The 3D printer version was created and uploaded online in January 2013. Ivan did the Robohand from Seattle, Washington and Richard did it from South Africa.

B) If you wanted to make one, where would you go to get it? If I want to make a Robohand, I will try to find it on the thingiverse website at first. I am very luck and I found it online. The website is http://www.thingiverse.com/make:55043. Then I am going to use the our group’s 3D printer to print it. The picture for the Robohand is attached. I prefer use black color material to print it.

C How many news articles can you find which reference this technology?

There are some of the "Robohand" articles. Here are many articles and I just list three of them

1. "Teen Crafts 3D-Printed 'Robohand' for Fingerless Boy" http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2430396,00.asp

2. “'Robohand' given to West Michigan preschooler proving to be life-changing”, http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2014/01/robohand_given_to_preschooler.html

3. "Boy Receives 3D Printed Prosthetic Hand" http://www.ubergizmo.com/2014/02/boy-receives-3d-printed-prosthetic-hand/

Blog 4: Response to blog 2

Response to team members thoughts on Blog#2

Dongao Yang- Yang totally disagree the OSE Project and he listed two main reasons for that One is the durability and safety issues and the other one is the sustainability and environmental impact. In my blog, I also mentioned the safety issues and I agree with the opinion what the safety problem will be a big issue for OSE Project. I did not think about the environmental issue when I was watching the video but after read Yang’s blog I think this issue is also critical. I agree that the OSE Project need to solve these two issues to get success.

Kyle Casterline- In Kyle’s blog, he thinks the OSE project is extremely useful for people who live in places where technological resources are not as abundant as they are here in America however some machines is hard to be fabricated. To support his idea, he listed the machines like the Linear Solar Concentrator, and the Laser Cutter. I hold the same opinion with him. He also mentioned the safety problem in OSE Project at the end of his blog and the safety issue is also the problem I mentioned in my blog.

Response to other classmates thoughts on Blog#2

Nam Pham- In his blog, he holds two main ideas. One is that the OSE Project will be very useful in third world countries. I totally agree with this opinion and I mentioned it as well in my blog. The second thing he mentions is how the agriculture side of it might be opposed. I did not think about this part before and I think it is a wonderful point.

Tom Vassa-Tom holds the idea that the OSE Project cannot affect as large an audience as Marcin thought. He thinks one of the critical issues is the people in third world countries has problem to machine with the aluminum and steel. It is a great point. When I was writing the blog, I only thought the safety issues the people in third world may meet and his opinion makes me to think in other way towards the OSE Project's issues.

Graham Deever – Graham think if the OSE Project is completed correct, it will be a revolution. In his blog, he focus on how will the OSE Project help people to get a better society and he even believe this project will help us to build a society on other planets. I agree the OSE Project is a very attractive idea but I need to see what the drawbacks it has. I think if Graham can explain why he believe the OSE Project can work will make his blog more convincible.

Blog 5: RepRap Timeline

go through the media timeline on RepRap wiki site and attempt to identify the most significant events from the last few years.

1) An event very important in the progression of 3D printing technology (open source or not)

Look through the RepRap Media timeline page and I think the most important even for the 3D printing history is in 2004 February. Adrian Bowyer publishes the idea for a self-replicating 3D printer, and concept of the RepRap is born! This is a revolution for the 3D printing technology in open source digital manufacturing. It gives power of fabrication to who so ever want it. People are able to print the 3D object which they can build. So today, students can assemble one of them wants to. So I believe it is the most important even in the progression of 3D printing technology

2) A not so important event in the progression of this technology (something overhyped perhaps?)

From the media time line, I think a not very important event is the article “Handheld Vacuum Cleaner 3D Printed” released on 2011 March 23th. The summary of this article is that people now can print out their own Vacuum. What’s more, the deeper meaning of this article is that people can use the open source programming as well as Rep Rap prints. The author offers his opinions on the exciting development as he puts it. This event is important but not as important as the other event. This article just gave the very basic idea that 3D printing technology will be apply to the market and the price will be much cheaper. However, the article did not solve the doubts people hold for 3D printing technology; for example the duration and the safety factory. I do not think this article could enhance the popularity of the 3D printing

3) Something which you found interesting which you would like to think or speak more about. This might overlap with #1 a bit, depending.

One of the interesting article is the “3D printer produces synthetic tissue capable of transmitting signals like nerves” The summary of this article is that the scientists already used a regular 3D printer to make a synthetic tissue which could have the ability to transmit long-distance electric signals just like the human nerves. It is a cool idea for me. So far, I only focus on using 3D printer to print prototype for research and commercial using. I did not realize that we can also use 3D printer for the medical using. From this article we knew that 3D printer even can print the synthetic tissue; I am shocked that 3D printer could print that complex and small thing. If the 3D printing technology can help the medical development, people will focus more on the 3D printing.

Blog 6: The Next Step for Projects

For the printer in our groups (the red and brown one), I think the extruder is the most critical problems. We spent lots of time for the extruder and hot tips problem and they are still not working well. For anther not working printer, there is not an extruder and we think we need to build one. As I know, there several groups have the same problem with us. What’s more the quality of the printed objects depends on the quality of the extruder. So improving the extruder and the hot tips are the main issues we need to deal with in the following several classes.

After we finish the non-working printer and improve the working printer, I prefer try to build the robot arm. I already talked with my team member Kyle and Yang, and they also interest in it. We will try a simply design at first Simply Design and then we are going to print a more complex one Complex Design. It will be very cool, if we can build those.

Our class did very well so far and I believe all of us are enjoying this class. There is a suggestion for the class. I think if each group has a specific place to store their printers and printing parts will be great. Our group lost our extruder and some printing parts and we felt disappointing to spend time to reprint them. Sometimes it takes a long time to find the printed pieces. This issue not only bothers our groups, but also troubles some other groups. There is no other problem bother us, and I believe our class will be better.

Blog 7: 3D Printing Research Using

To use 3D printer to print the piece for research using is definitely a good idea. Actually I thought this idea before and wrote it in my blog. I love this idea and we can save money and time by using this idea. However, there are many restrictions for this idea which we cannot ignore. The main restriction is that we can only use this method for the basic research equipment according to the nowadays 3D printing technology. For my personal experience, most of high level research equipment requires very accurate pieces which the normal 3D printer cannot print. It may causes huge error in the result and I do not believe professors want to take this risk. Although it is hard to use 3D printing piece for high level research equipment, we can use this for the basic teaching equipment for example the basic physics equipment. Those equipment does not require very accurate result and they are frequent broken because students do not have experience to use them. The robotic arm our group is planning to print can be used as the teaching equipment for the mechanical design class and the junior design class. So my opinion is that the 3D printing piece is not accurate enough for research using but we can apply it for the teaching equipment.
