Prusa Mendel Documentation

This is the Bill Of Materials (BOM) for the Prusa Mendel i2.

It is consistent with the build instructions.

This includes:

  • Greg's Hinged Accessible Extruder Carriage
  • Bearing variants: ABS/PLA, LM8UU or LM8EUU
  • Cold glass/mirror bed
  • T2.5 timing belt
  • Aluminium T2.5 pulleys
  • ABS/PLA Z-axis couplings
  • ABS/PLA bearing guides

This does not include:

  • An electronics mount

For variations, please adjust the quantities you use accordingly. See below.

Printed parts

The files you need for the printed parts can be found in the PrusaMendel GitHub repository. Run generate-metric.bat (or one of the batch files for the linear bearings) and it'll generate all the STLs needed. You will need OpenSCAD installed and it will need to be in your path.

Don't cut costs here.

Stepper Motors

The Prusa iteration 2 uses 5 NEMA17 stepper motors, including the extruder. Two of these motors, the Z axis motors, are connected to the same stepper driver of the electronics. If using Wade's Extruder, its stepper motor needs a minimum holding torque of 40Ncm (0.4Nm). More information can be found on the Stepper Motor page.

Controller Electronics

About any RepRap controller works for the Prusa iteration 2. Required features: 4 stepper drivers, 1 thermistor input and 1 heater output for the extruder and optionally another thermistor/heater pair for the heated bed. Choosing the best one for your printer is mostly a matter of taste. For comparisons, see List of electronics, Comparison of Electronics and Alternative Electronics.

Tools and supplies

To build your Prusa, you'll require the following tools and supplies:

Oil Any loose viscosity oil should work just fine for the smooth rods and Z screw. For example, gun oil.
Allen key 1.25 mm For the grub screws.
Allen key 3.00 mm For the M4 bolts.

= Printing bed

A heated bed usually yield higher quality finished builds with materials such as ABS and PLA, as it prevents warping. It also removes the need for printing on rafts.

Timing belt

The GT2 timing belts and pulleys seem to become the new norm.


Included in the GitHub Prusa i2 repository are STL files for ABS/PLA T5 pulleys. Both the T5 belt type and the use of ABS/PLA pulleys is no longer recommended. Whatever timing belt type you end up using, ensure your pulleys match.

Z-axis couplings

Some people prefer aluminium 5 mm to 8 mm Z-axis couplings, but others say they have a tendency to stretch.

Bearing guides

It is easier to use fender washers on each side of the 608 bearings instead of printing and glueing the ABS/PLA bearing guides. In this case, use an M8 30 mm fender washer, then a normal M8 washer, then the 608 bearing, then a normal M8 washer and then the M8 30 mm fender washer again.

Electronics mount

While you could easily make yourself a mount from MDF and secure it to the RepRap using zip ties, some prefer to print this ABS/PLA Electronics Mounting Plate for RAMPS and Printrboard.
