files

any plans to use torrents to distribute files? --Dorkmo 21:09, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, the new server has 1G/sec of uncapped bandwidth so we can do things like seed. I'd alos like to sell CDs with all the files and instructions in one place to fund the project. The CDs will also contain an audio track so we can have an official i3 song. --Glen 14:45, 13 January 2013 (GMT)

features

I don't think the ability to run a webshop matters for a RepRap documentation site at all. MediaWiki is designed for pretty exactly the purposes RepRap is using it. There's no ability to upload STL files, but that's not a matter of the content management system, but a lack of wiki administration. --Traumflug 10:32, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

A shop was just an example of a basic service the Mediawiki can't run (source: #mediawiki). With the number of good developers involved with the Reprap project we should get a content management system that can easily have new services bolted on. --Glen 14:50, 13 January 2013 (GMT)

freedom

Also, who would run this new server? There has to be a formal entity doing this and a commercial entity, or an entity sponsored by someone with commercial interests, whould be the end of RepRap's freedom. I consider RepRapPro claiming sort of ownership of this community on some occasions to be bad enough already. --Traumflug 10:32, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Reprappro has control of the current server. The new server was built without reprappro, though Dr Bowyer (co-owner of Reprappro) has asked for an account on the new server. The server would be run by people in the Reprap community who's day job is to run servers. The website also needs web-admin, DBAs, web-designers, moderators & developers from the Reprap community. The site is currently supplied by a commercial intrest so our two options are: Option Freedom: Be stuck on a slow shared server we don't pay for that can instantly disappear when the benefactor get board. Option get a job you bum: Raise money to pay for a Reprap server we can manage with a contract that stops us being shut-down without a few months notice. --Glen 14:58, 13 January 2013 (GMT)

Federated social communication & media base.

To me, it seems that the site needs some form of communication toolkit. We want to keep what we got, wiki/mail lists/forums/blog/IRC, but we need to expand on the latter two parts.

Friendica (Features/FAQ/resources) is a fully working alternative or rather complementing dito for the Community portal. It could address the communication part, can be organic in its nature, has a built-in IRC client, extendable (plugins)and is GNU GPL compatible, which fit well with RepRap.

An official RepRap integration of Friendica would allow a much more userfriendly (federated)communication/interaction between users, while still preserving options for us that "don't do social media". For those who do though, would probably find it nice to have everything under the same roof, while still preserving what one already has, but adding more features/possibilities. --Danielpublic 11:32, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
