Thoughts from 2016:

This project might be interesting to developp:

• A TFT color lcd is more appealing and user friendly than a monochrome graphic one and even more than one with only characters capabilities
• The price for such components (the TFT + a µController) are fairly low these days (less than 20$ for the LCD + a few bucks for a µController that could handle the communications (+ a custom board might be needed because it would be silly to use a second arduino (or whatever else) in 2016))
• We could add an ethernet/wifi capability (I have absolutely no knowledge in that part (too much programming/networking skills required) but I believe it's totally doable

however, something to note is that nowadays there are solutions including low power ARM boards (such as the Raspberry PI) that are used to complete similar functions (IE: with Octoprint), but some users may not want their printers to be connected to the network or a complex program and adding a Computer doesn't solve the nice LCD need.

This kind of project (there is at least this one, the one from Marco Antonini and a few from companies including such LCDs in their Printers) could be interesting to develop further:

I ordered a 5" LCD with digitizer and I'll see how it can go, I'll also try to do something I'm able to: develop a PCB that will hold the µController + connectors for the LCD, the Printer and hopefully more.
