Using NiChrome wire for Hotend what should the resistence be?
November 16, 2011 05:27PM
Ok so new here to reprap/forums in general but my question what resistance should be on the NiChrome wire when all wrapped up on the Hotend? The wire is 30 awg. Am I right in assuming that the resistance should be around 5 Ohms or so like the resistor type hotends?

Thanks in Advance!

Hey millergd247,

It seams that 5 or 6 ohms, as in the total resistance of the piece of wire you are using, is a number people typically use. I have the makergear hotend and I cut a piece of nichrome wire to 6 ohms. I used a multimeter to measure the resistance and the length of the wire. Great tool to have. If you look at Ohm's Law..

I (Current) = Voltage / Resistance you can calculate about how much current you are going to be pulling. Assuming you are using 12 V, you'll get 2.4 or 2 amps for 5 and 6 ohms, respectively.

I would imagine that this variance doesn't particularly matter, except that if you use a smaller resistance for your wire, you will have a larger current pull on your power supply.

Keep Calm out there.

Ben
