herringbone rack and pinion?

Is anyone working on the development of a printer that uses printed herringbone rack and pinion for X and Y movement instead of belts?

If this has been ruled out for some reason I'd be interested in hearing why.

Why Herringbone? Why not spur rack or helical rack? Herringbone is expensive when there is rack and pinion available off the shelf. There is some resolution issues if +/-.002" is not close enough.

There are many people making CNC tables and that ilk with rack and pinion, but that is usually for a large area such as 4'x6' or 8' x 12'. Aren't these printers typically pretty small?

expensive? If you print them they cost the same as spur/helical. herringbone has less backlash than spur.
