I have a usb to rs232 serial cable I got off ebay for £5. would that work with the gen3 boards?
It has Rx, Tx, RTS, CTS & gnd pins.
I'm hoping to get my gen3 boards this week!

Hey Qbert

You should probably post a link to the item for those in the know to examine... Seems like a good price.

If you wish to use it with the reprap configuration I believe it needs to be a 5.5 volt cable as the motherboard is powerd that way. If you are using the Makerbot configuration (where 5v power is supplied by the ATX) then I would imagine you could use a 3v cable - but I do not have first hand knowledge of this option though.

I use the makerbot config with a 5v cable. This then will allow me to program my extruder without ATX power as it provides the power for the board when I program it. Maybe it would still happen with a 3v cable but I am not sure.

thx ageing hippy,

I had a look inside the cable electronics, there is no RTS or CTS wired to the pins, so its useless!
I found a site the tells you what to look for in the usb - 232 cable, [www.lammertbies.nl]

I have just bought a proper usb - ttl for just over £11 on ebay.
