Host & firmware recommendations
October 14, 2011 06:20AM
Hello all,

After a busy summer the time has come to focus on my reprap project again.
Soon i'd like to start testing my electronics.

For that i'll need to do the following:
>decide on firmware
>decide on host software

Bearing in mind the following:
> I have a Mac computer, so host software that works nicely on mac is of course prefered
> I prefer not to use java based software (if possible) given the speed penalty on older computers such as this one?
> I'm not afraid of compiling but if I can avoid it I will
> Host software and firmware should play nice together

I've looked on the Wiki and read through the forums but I'd like to ask here as well.

Do you have any recommendation for me with regards to the software?
Pointers to manuals & walkthrough's are always welkcome as well.

Thanks,

Evert

My current set up:
>Hardware: Prusa mendel in assembly with Clonedel parts which are to be replaced later on by printed parts
drilling parts accurately turned out to be nearly impossible (especially pulleys).
>HBP: Prusa PCB (to be soldered) and mounted under glass
>Clonedel Wade's extruder & Arcol.hu hotend
>Electronics RAMPS 1.2
>eMac osX 10.4.9 (800 Mhz G4) screen 1280x960

I'd suggest pronterface, and sprinter.

Pronterface is hands down superb compared to any other host software I've tried. And it being in python is a bonus, since you need it for skeinforge anyway.

I've chosen sprinter for my sanguinololu (have yet to run it though), as it is widely used and as far as I understand very stable. If you like to tinker more with the firmware, there are many alternatives.
