Power supply - how strong?

How strong power supply you need for rep rap?
I can easily "virtually" print some object with my 3d printer.
But as soon I power on nozzle heater, power supply dies.

When I for first time started up heater everything seem OK, except that solder began melting on heating resistor.

How strong is the power supply you are using? I remember seeing somewhere that you need 4.5 amps for a basic printer and you should add 11 amps for a heated bed. Based on that I have calculated that that you need around a 200W power supply with a heated bed.

Sounds like you have a short circuit across the resistor. Can you measure the resistance of it?

You only need a ~6 amp 12 V supply to run a RepRap without a heated bed, and ~16 amps with a heated bed. The heated bed alone can draw 9 - 10 amps depending on the manufacture, the hotend draws ~2 amps, and the motors about 3 - 4 amps together.
