I think acetone leaves a white tint to PLA parts and might make them a bit soft but you might have an idea worth exploring.

Instead of acetone you can use sodium hydroxide (Drain cleaner) to remove PLA support from ABS (The other way around), I have seen this done on BFB machines. The prints were awful, but the support removal process was quite functional.
