TOTAL NEWB ROSTOCK HOMING missbehaviour

Assembled it
It responded correctly to -ve & +ve Z GUI commands in Repetier host
Pressed the home button and it would home correctly
Threaded in the filament and used the Repetier filament feed GUI control to get the Filament towards the hotend
Then stopped to undo the connection on the top before it reached the hotend.
Then with NEWB intent , ran a test print to see how the thing behaves without the filament in the hot end
It started out fine.
Looked like it was like 5 mm away from the bed, which was way off from the distance calibrated using the sheet of paper technique manually lowering the hotend till it just drags the paper.
The using the Kill Print Icon in RepHost GUI stopped the Job in a controlled fashion. Then decided to recalibrate it before printing for the first time due to the change in height from the bed.

Pressed the LCD button with home all selected in Configuration \ Z Calib. and the carriage went south a couple of mm's?

Googling leads me here where some folks are seeing similar behavior, but out of the box they could never get it to work
In this case it worked just fine and now the carriage will only move down a couple of mils using either the LCD Button or the GUI home icon, but not up
X and y are still working

Is there a way to confirm if its like corrupt firmware or electronics breakdown based on the sequence of events stated ?
BTW tried reversing the XYZ end stop connectors on the RAMPs 1.4 board but nothing changes.
