Standard design format?

Hi all,
I have been looking at the EVA design standard that comes from the Ratrig. It has a potential to make it easier for one to use ideas from different platforms and make changing things easier.

I have not been able to really get through all of it, but I am curious about what other standards are used in the repraps? Is there, for example, in the prusa mendel variants a way to swap x-carriages or z axis? Is there a 'zone' for where x meets z, so that one could use linear bearings or threaded rod or screws with just swapping out the one section?

My printer is in need of a rebuild, and I was thinking that if I could use lead screw instead of belts to see how they work for me, then swap to the next style without a complete redesign. Same goes for the hotend or extruder. Can one just swap one design for another without replacing the x carriage?( I believe that it is possible with EVA, though I am lost on the jargon for the extruders and hotends)

Thanks,
Scot
