Where do you live?

I can get a PIC16F648A-E/P for you, is this sufficient (only difference seems to be that it has a higher temperature tolerance than the one specified by parts.reprap.)

i often wonder why they have opted to use the arduino over anything else, i know there are options out there that are cheaper and faster, and better overall. i know people are also free to do what they want too, i just have not seen a compelling argument for the arduino yet. other than its supposed to be open source.

dissidence: gcc, 4x faster than pic for same clock rate, popularity..

I think the excellent support by the universally available gcc suite was a primary motivating factor. The sdcc compiler which was being used for the pic software didn't work too well. I suppose that the old forum stuff with complaints about it and discussion of the move are still around.
