USB com connection in linux failure

I'm having trouble connecting the Sanguinolo electronics of my Huxley in linux.

The Wiki says this should "just work" but I am only getting errors from the kernel.

The errors are the same whether the power is connected or not. In no particular order, several variations of these errors may appear when connecting the device:

hub 5-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
usb 5-2: device not accepting address 26, error -71
usb 5-2: new full-speed USB device number 27 using xhci_hcd
usb 5-2: Device not responding to set address.
usb 1-1.3: new full-speed USB device number 112 using ehci_hcd
usb 1-1.3: device not accepting address 112, error -32
hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3
usb 1-1.3: new full-speed USB device number 114 using ehci_hcd
usb 1-1.3: device descriptor read/64, error -32

Might be an issue with USB signals not getting through properly. Possible causes are: housing of the USB jack not soldered to GND, weak shielding of the cable, too much electromagnetic radiation in the room, etc.

I'll try another cable.

If it isn't the cable, I'm in trouble. This is a pre-assembled Sanguinololu that came with a RepRapPro Huxley kit, which seems to have been tested before shipment (there was a sticker). I hope I haven't somehow fried the board/chip/something.

Also, my Huxley isn't fully connected yet. I was hoping to see if I could communicate with the chip before I get to snapping on all the wires. Should I finish all the connections before I try the USB?

You can talk to the board with nothing else connected. It is of limited use like that but it works.

try a M119 command for eg (M119: Get End stop Status)

The USB on the SL is basically the small chip on the back FT232RL . It provides the serial over usb for the computer to see If its not your cable... Its that of one of its support components
J1 USB USBPTH
C7 0.1uF CAPPTH2
C8 0.1uF CAPPTH2
C11 0.1uF CAPPTH2
C15 0.1uF CAPPTH2
C16 4.7uF CAP_POLPTH2

Re linux, it does just work in many distros, but not all. Ubuntu works well. If you not using that try the Ubuntu live CD
