I was wondering if stepper drivers are absolutely needed with sanguino 1.3a because I currently cannot run my stepper motors and i cannot find any reputable information

Yes, you absolutely do need the stepper drivers!

Some sort of stepper driver is essential

Have you seen [www.reprap.org] ?

Lots of good information on standard Pololu A4988 stepper drivers.
