servo motor newbie

trying to build a christmas display. wanting to raise santa up in the trees til he disappears. then after a few seconds he comes back down. santa is about 25lbs. wanting to raise him 30 feet. is a servo motor the way to go on this? also want to install a 3 minute countdown clock that resets itself after each rise and fall.

A simple DC motor should do this fine, no need for positional accuracy. After all it's neither important wether he raises 30 feet or 30.01 feet, nor wether this takes 2 minutes or 121 seconds.

Agreed Traumflug. Although even an line-voltage AC motor (garbage picked washing machine motor, etc.) could be used quite easily, and ime, for far less expense than a dc motor.
