Here we are worrying about that when at the moment the cheapest
commercial version is $15,000...

sarcasm aside, automation direct has some pretty good prices on steppers for the states... NEMA 23 (which i'm guessing these are...) is $29.99



its going to be nice when we move to Mendel and servos, gain resolution, error checking, and drop $30 off the price of the machine.

rough guess. seems like we could get good motors + encoders for around $20, which is $10 less than the automation direct ones.

Just a (fairly obvious) note here, if you go for a different torque motor
the physical interfaces need to be the same for it all to fit(i.e. the PCD
for the fastening holes and the shaft lengths and diamters). The data
sheet's got the info...
