cutting little gears...

cutting little gears...
March 30, 2007 04:59PM
I was talking with Dan Gates at Solarbotics this morning about a variety of things. I was telling him about the hobbing machine design that I'd run across and he wondered if it was worthwhile doing given the availability of laser cutters. He noted that Pololou does jobbing given a standard .dxf (autocad) file in high resolution plastics cutting. I'd mentioned the little gears that you all are hand moulding for Darwin and Dan said why didn't we just line a bunch of them up side by side and have Pololou cut them for us.

************************************************

$2.50 per minute of laser cutting time, billed with 0.1-minute increments (the machine cuts 1/8" acrylic at a little under two seconds per inch, and it cuts 1/8" ABS at about three seconds per inch). You can contact us for a quote.

************************************************

Acrylic will get you 30 inches/minute and ABS 20 inches/minute. Dan said that they'd sent stuff to them and the resolution on fine parts like tiny gears is awesome.

That's certainly worth bearing in mind, but now that Ed (following Vik)
has got making them oneself fully sorted (complete with for-free
internal thread that goes straight on the Darwin drive rods), let's
stick with that for now.

Best wishes

additionally, a laser cutting head is one of the first things i'm
looking into doing with my robot. if our linear axes can get 0.05 +/-
that should be enough to cut our own gears.

then its just a matter of finding the right laser diode, and printing
mounting parts, etc.
