Thoughts on terminals
February 25, 2007 04:15AM
I was wondering if it might be an idea to use standard terminal strip
instead of fancy 2-pin screw connectors? The stuff is cheap and widely
available, right? Just run solid copper from the board into one side of
a standard screw terminal strip, and people connect the power leads to
the other side.

I know it's a bit bigger, but it can also be very firmly fixed to the
board.

And you can put a whole long strip of it on the comms board to
distribute the power...

sounds good... what do these standard terminal strips look like?

On my machine, I'm using these:

I think they're brilliant. Not only are they plastic and potentially
reprappable, but they are very quick to plug and unplug, they snap in
and stay on well and they're keyed so you can't put things in backwards
(which rapidly fries things).

yeah, i was dismantling a PC the other day and they use those
extensively. i think i'm going to write up a guide on harvesting
parts from PC's and other electronics once I get some time.

any idea what those things are called so i can lookup mouser part #s?

I only specified screw connectors for the power because I thought
that'd be even more reliable. But they're on 2.54 mm pitch, so a whole
legion of standard connectors will fit in their stead.

how are these attached to the circuit board? do they use the 2.54mm
pitch connectors?
