I think I found the reason for my dead extruder board. The short on the
motor caused the driving transistor to heat up so much that - despite a
honking great heatsink - the solder under the transistor melted and
dropped onto the track below. This shorted the 12V line to ground
through the blown motor winding, and my PSU entered current limit mode.
Amazingly, removing the solder bridge and replacing the motor fixed the
board. Nothing else had blown.
The replacement motor takes the same polarity too!
