Is there a setting in Sprinter to enable the positive end stops? I am trying to use push button type limit switches but they don't seem to trigger a stop code.

Did you ever get this fixed? I am having a similar problem. Have you tried changing settings in the firmware?

Why not just enable the software max limits in sprinter?

Where should I be looking for this option? It was not obvious to me in configuration.

On the version I have atm it's in configuration.h line 90:

const bool max_software_endstops = false; //If true, axis won't move to coordinates greater than the defined lengths below.
