Missing step on my controller

Hi there everyone,
I have now got my controller looking like it wants to do what I ask, but there seems to be a missing step in the 'Prepare' process.
I want to move my axes, but when I go through the stages I find that the stage where you select the amount to move, ie 10mm, 1mm or 0.1mm, is missing.
What do I do to fix this?

A first step would be to describe what you actually have. There are hundreds of controllers. A second step would be to move to the appropriate section in this forum.

Wow, I will consider myself scolded. Sorry about that.
Firstly I hope I have been put in the correct section now, please let me know if I am not and tell me where I need to go?
Second, my kit is a Sainsmart mega with a ramps 1.4. The controller is their LCD 2004.

What "stages" do you expect? To move around manually you usually connect with a host, like Pronterface, and either type G1 commands manually of hit one of the manual movement commands. To get an idea what's actually sent to the printer, Pronterface has a "Debug G-code" in it's menu. It's the same G-code CNC milling machines use.
