I didn't think you could solder thermistors as the heat would crack the glass. Obviously that doesn't make sense as we use them to measure heat, but why else would they come with the clamped ferules?
Clamped ferules can provide a more durable connection than soldered. However for most printers, it's probably not going to make a difference. I've always soldered my connections and I've never had a issue with cracking the bead. If you're holding the iron on there so long that so much heat reaches the bead, you need to get a better iron that can more quickly heat up the joint while not letting the heat soak in to the whole lead.
