I think I might finally be a convert. Very early on in my reprap history, I had an issue with slic3r unable to slice a simple object, so I moved over to skeinforge and it just worked for me. I listened to everybody praise slic3r, but I was very happy staying with skeinforge. I tried to move back to slic3r a couple of times, the most recent being 0.9.7, but every time the print results were very unsatisfactory. Perhaps it was just bad timing on my part, trying out known bad releases.

In any event, I downloaded 0.9.8 today and have been happily slicing and printing all evening. I'm not totally committed yet. I've only tried PLA so far, but I'm very pleased with the results. I still have some fine-tuning to do, and I still want to try out ABS, but it's looking good.

Wow, have used 0.9.8 for a few hours now, very impressed from 0.9.7.... have been using 0.7.2b just because of all the issues I was having with 0.9.7, looks great so far with no blobs on layer change.

Thank you slic3r!

I think this is the best Slic3r version for long time. Thank you!

However inner loops of curved perimeters are not fully sophisticated. See attached picture.

This is the reason I moved to skeinforge. I really like slic3r's interface but how it deals with curves is not ideal and I've found a couple of objects unusable when sliced in slic3r because of this.

qawsed, you can just reduce extrusion width a little bit to make sure two traces fit in there. Just open a G-code file to read what width Slic3r has been using, then reduce it a little bit and set it in the Advanced section under Print Settings.
Hi Folks,

I'm trying to switch to Slic3r 0.9.8 and Repetier, formerly a Replicator G and Skeinforge user. I'm running an up-to-date Windows 7 and using Slic3r through Repetier Host. Output is Marlin style for my new little PrintrBot JR. An interesting printer, but I've got to get production going, again, soon.

Things were going well, but then I began getting the following messages near the end of slicing:

Log excerpt:
...
14:00:23.055 : => Infilling layers
14:00:33.276 : => Generating skirt
14:00:33.307 : => Exporting G-code to C:\Users\Ted\AppData\Local\RepetierHost\composition.gcode
14:00:33.427 : Argument "\x{31}\x{30}..." isn't numeric in multiplication (*) at C:/PROGRA~1/Repetier-Host/Slic3r/lib/std/Slic3r/GCode.pm line 33.

The composition.gcode file contains:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
; generated by Slic3r 0.9.8 on 2013-03-08 at 14:00:33

; This is the basic Slic3r print settings for PrintrBot Jr.

; layer_height = 0.3
; perimeters = 1
; top_solid_layers = 2
; bottom_solid_layers = 2
; fill_density = 0.3
; perimeter_speed = 30
; infill_speed = 100%
; travel_speed = 130
; scale = 1
; nozzle_diameter = 0.4
; filament_diameter = 1.72
; extrusion_multiplier = 0.95
; perimeters extrusion width = 0.42mm
; infill extrusion width = 0.42mm
; first layer extrusion width = 0.66mm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's all she wrote.

I checked the permissions on the composition.gcode file and made them as liberal as possible. But no change. Slic3r is able to write something into the file, so that doesn't seem to be a root cause. There seems to be some coding issue, here.

Does anyone have any ideas? Have you seen this before?

HELP, I'm stuck.

Thanks for whatever ideas you can provide.

This usually happens when one of the parameter fields that is supposed to contain a numeric value doesn't. Mae sure you don't have a blank field when you want 0.

This problem is reported over and over - Slic3r should be more defensive, and at least put out a message that is understandable.
Thanks for your help, but it isn't yet solving the problem.

I went through the 3 slic3r config files but didn't find any numeric parameters that were left blank, except, possibly for unchecked check boxes. Just for grins, I also did the same with the repertier host (V0.84) configs. The same error occurred. However, I did get a few messages in the log after the error. Here is the whole log:

Also, I have been using both the old and new style configuration settings. I went back to the 3 separated groups.

Does any of this suggest anything?

My next steps may be to try to reload slic3r and see if it will run standalone.
I will appreciate any advice you can offer.

Rich

Maybe look for commas where decimalpoints are expected or vicyvers, I remember something like that.
Thanks, jbernardis and justcurious, I found a work-around for the problem. It has to do with the configuration files, as you suggested, but not exactly with a bad parameter. It seems, in fact to be a bug and a hidden parameter.

I was experimenting with configurations and beeing an overly curious type, clicked the Setup button in the Slic3r panel in Repetier Host. I used it to create configuration directory, not knowing that it would disable the new 3 file system, which is much better than the single config file. In an attempt to undo this, I removed the link to the new config directory, which led to the problem. Now I can complete a slice operation, but I'm not sure how to get back to the new editing method. It also looks as if I have to edit the config file "by hand" now.

Best,

Rich

Hello

Im having trouble with my printing.

The problem is when I load my .gcode file which was sliced from .stl file I made from Autodesk Inventor 2013, the preview of the printing has this unnecessary diagonal line to the corner. As a result, my nozzle unnecessarily goes around the corner and it extrudes the filament to the corner. When the nozzle goes back to continue his printing, the center is not the same (when I tried to make a cylinder, it goes back from the corner, It makes another layer of cylinder but it is not aligned with the circle below). Maybe you cannot imagine the problem so I attached the preview on my pronterface.

Please see my attachment, I really need help sad smiley Cylinder.zip

So, I figured this has something to do with the .stl file. Can I actually use Autodesk Inventor 2013 to make the .stl file? Or should I use another software? What do u guys usually use?

Thank you for your prompt reply

Regards,

Arsyan
