Who would be interested in designing a VERY BASIC sewing machine with me?
(It´s not THAT hard. Only 2 parts that are somewhat complex in shape.
Synchronjisation of upper and lower part is trivial as simle one turn of the axis
is one cycle.)
[craftydaisies.com]

I have a trivial sewing machine here that is mostly made out of plastic with
very simple mechanics.
If we can design the printable bobbin in some parametric modeller,
we can have a working sawing machine in no time. That would be a starting-
point, so specialized machines or even a toolhead for embroidery can be designed.

Just an animation of how a sewing-maching works.
Nothing complicated.

I've already giving up on this sub-forum.

I'll reboot it once we have Big_Fat_Upload_Button technology. smiling bouncing smiley

Actually I've given up on the people frequenting the
"Let's design something" -subforum to ever either
post an idea I'm willing to participate in or someone
comming up to participate in something I post.
With 1-4 postings per month this subforum is dead.
(part of what you get with creating one forum for every
thread that gets more then a few pages long.)

That may be.

So, if you're going to be using a different forum, will you be telling people to upload to Makerbot's Thingiverse or to RepRap's Mediawiki? winking smiley

To Thingiverse.
But just the results. It is good for publishing but a dropbox is better for collaboration then both.
Just Linke I do in this forum.
It is simply the better site for publishing objects.

If you'd prefer to document in Thingiverse than in RepRap, I'll be happy to create a new forum for you to advertise Thingiverse in. smiling bouncing smiley

I'm here to help. If you believe the best use of a non-profit space documentation system and community is to advertise a for-profit space documentation system and community, then I feel obligated to help you in your quest.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do, like replace the "upload file" link on the mediawiki with an outgoing link to Thingiverse. smiling smiley

It is simply the better site for publishing objects.
So you're not interested in helping RepRap become better? sad smiley We're a non-profit community and documentation system and community and we need people like you to help use become better..

Do you know php? Are you good with Databases?

Sure. I posted some invitations to collaborate on
designs I am interested in.

You are asking the wrong question.
You should ask "Do the other non-profit community projects
leave enough time to help with our wiki, forum and other sites"
and the answer is no.
I can offer suggestions and there are some things I would like
to design if I find others to collaborate with. That is all I can offer.

In my view what you should do is to embrace thingiverse and
talk and work with them.
They have a great site to publish, tag, comment and enhance objects
but lack a way of organizing, documenting and visualising groups
and especially family-trees of objects. Your wiki does not do a good
job at doing that (lots of extruders for example but no family tree
of what is a derivative of what and builds on what other designs)
but it COULD do that job just fine.
Reprap is about improving the reprap rapid prototyper, thingiverse
is about sharing designs.

Perhaps we should move this to it's own thread. This is no longer
about designing sewing machines.

The same way vimeo embraces youtube ... hmmm ...

That might be a conflict of interests. Would you email the director and treasurer of the RepRap Research Foundation and ask him if it is ethical to tell people who come to RepRap that they should instead use Thingiverse?

I think it would be a conflict of interests and actually hurt RepRap by making it die on the vine. For example, RepRap's laser-cut powder printer would be documented over at Thingiverse, rather than at RepRap.

It would be sort of like the front-man for a credit union telling everyone not to deposit their money in the credit union but to use the nice shiny bank down the street. It doesn't feel right somehow ...

Why don't you email the director and treasurer of the RepRap Research Foundation? He's in charge of making us better, and has a deep and personal understanding of conflicts of interest.

He can tell you if it helps RepRap to encourage our fellow developers to document in for-profit spaces which aren't part of RepRap. And he's very careful to make sure his personal practices in this regard are in line with his ethics and values. I would say that man's level of integrity, consistency, and honesty astounds me.

So please ask him if using RepRap to advertise a for-profit competing project is a abuse of authority and a misuse of resources. He's a senior officer of a non-profit, so he takes this stuff seriously. smiling bouncing smiley

Your wiki does not do a good job at doing that (lots of extruders for example but no family tree of what is a derivative of what and builds on what other designs)

So, are you saying you'd like to help should build that into RepRap's wiki?

Reprap is about improving the reprap rapid prototyper,
I think we may also be interested in using RepRaps to make cool stuff. And in sharing designs? What do you think? You're a RepRap developer, and you want to share a sewing machine design.

thingiverse is about sharing designs.
Does this mean it's not about improving the reprap rapid protoyper?

Does this mean the RepRap generation 4 electronics are not in Thingiverse?

Don't act like there is any kind of "competition" going on. It's not.
Since when is Thingiverse for-profit?

>So, are you saying you'd like to help should build that into RepRap's wiki?

I don't think there are any features missing to do that.
I can't because I simply was unable to get such an overview together,
so I can't write it down.

> For example, RepRap's laser-cut powder printer would be documented

No, document it in the RepRap-Wiki as it's a reprap, not some random thing designed
to be printed on a reprap. It has an official version that is documented and
has a roadmap and changelog here and a maintainer deciding about the next
version of it.

However if some people come together to design e.g. a better pencil-holder.
That has nothing to do with the reprap-project itself. So let people use whatever
they feel is the apropriate tool to share their design, whatever site they feel like
using to document it and whatever forum they feel like to discuss it.

... Are you certain?

Did you email the director and treasurer of the RepRap Research Foundation and ask him about it? He's extremely good at conflicts of interest, misuses of resources, and abuses of authority. He can tell you what happens when one starts filling a non-profit webspace with outgoing links into a for-profit webspace. smiling bouncing smiley

Peter is our lead developer; would you contact him about this matter?

Include a link to this forum thread if you like.

However if some people come together to design e.g. a better pencil-holder.
That has nothing to do with the reprap-project itself.

If the developer who designs a better pencil-holder uploads it in the wiki, it's my responsibility and joy to curate and steward that and show it off to people.

Also, the RepRap project is about making pencil-holders. And prosthetic legs, and vases.

And sewing machines. It has everything to do with sewing machines.

Which is why we have this forum. And the wiki.

Sure, right away.

I didn't know anyone had an overview of all these extruders
and -derivatives popping up.

Thanks,
Marcus

Thanks Marcus.

I'd like to show off the powder printer via the front page of the mediawiki, but with no images, text, or files, well ....smiling bouncing smiley

Also, please let me know if you get in contact with the director and treasurer of the RepRap Research Foundation. He used to work for vimeo, so he understands this stuff on a very deep level.

Marcus?

The man in charge of the RepRap Research Foundation, Zach Smith, is also in charge of the RepRap Research Foundation's projects, Replicator-G and Sanguino.

He's also in charge of Makerbot, Thingiverse, and the secret website where he's developing the Generation 4 Electronics.

Since the Generation 4 Electronics are RepRap Research, he'll probably be too busy to answer any of your emails about conflicts of interest or queries about whether or not it is useful and meaningful for RepRap and Thingiverse to cooperate.

Of course, if he was interested in cooperating with the rest of us RepRap developers, he'd have built Replicator-G, and Sanguino, Makerbot, and Thingiverse into RepRap, rather than making sure he had control of them in order to build a for-profit empire.

If you are interested in understanding how Zach Smith cooperates with the rest of us, please read this blog post

[
blog.makerbot.com]

Basically, Thingiverse, (the people responsible for screwing over RepRap's documentation), decided it would be a fun marketing exercise to use Makerbot's blog to fling poop at us for not having perfect documentation.

I apologize for not being more straight-forward with you earlier. Zach Smith engineered this situation, and his actions disgust me.
