Please avoid to buy this electronics (http://www.mendel-parts.com/) because they are closed source but based on Open Source hardware and firmware from RepRap project. Such ripoff hurts RepRap project.

Casainho,

Ummm ... Camiel posted this on the Gen 6 Electronics page just now:

@note above: As promised earlier, we will publish all files needed, so these electronics are open-source, WHEN we start shipping. Today is first day we ship, as soon as we are done (in 1-2hours) we will upload necessary files.

He is a good person and is not planning on doing the Gollum thing with his files "My (closed-source) Precious ... Mine!"

So, since Camiel will be putting up the files in a few hours; at that time I will close the thread and file it away. smiling bouncing smiley

Casainho, next time, it may be best to have a private word with people before publicly holding their feet to the fire? This way we don't bring conflict into our community.

Of course, if we ever do run into someone who deliberately and maliciously withholds files, I will be right next to you throwing eggs at the guy.

It's been a long few months for Camiel so let's make his life more stressful unneccessarily? He's one of our fellows and trying to help.

As an aside to all RepRap entrepreneurs:. it is best practice to put the files up as quickly as possible when selling stuff. Ideally, upload the files before shipping. Even more ideally, upload the files several months before shipping, when the boards are at the "napkin sketch" stage.

And give all your competitors a head start? I don't think that is likely to happen.

I think the open hardware revolution is still having growing pains. I've described an extruding Mendel as the goose that lays silver eggs, except those eggs are rapidly being debased with copper. Uploading the fruit of your self-funded R&D before you even go into production is just asking someone in a better position to scoop in and beat you to market.

I'm inclined to let the innovators earn their grubstake back, at least, before twisting their arms about uploading their sources. We want these people to continue to innovate, right? As long as they honor the GPL in a timely enough manner to not be sued, I'll not complain.

Pica,

Your approach makes good sense. And I wish we could do it. smiling bouncing smiley

Problem is, our fellow developers, who are normally courteous and compassionate with each other,
get highly fussy in these scenarios.

Gently, politely, and respectfully requesting that folk upload files simultaneous with shipping stuff reduces conflict and also results in sexy, sexy files.

The trick is to not actually invoke the GPL, or explain one's honor and duty vis a vis ethics, compassion, and fellowship as a RepRap developer, but rather to say:

Here's the page we use as a template to make new pages:
http://reprap.org/wiki/Better_Example
please copy it into a new page:
http://reprap.org/wiki/Generation_N_Electronics
(where N is an even integer)
and then edit a bit, change the default file names:
"your_bot_solid_model.xml.zip" should be "generation_N_electronics_all_the_eagle_files.zip"
and click the link and upload files. smiling bouncing smiley

So, what we've actually done here is explain how to document, rather than start an argument.

Again, challenging folk tends to result in conflict. sad smiley Educating folk results in files.smiling smiley

But waiting patiently, unfortunately, tends to result in challenges.

I don't know much about Dwarf Fortress, but I've been lurking long enough to see a tantrum or two ;-)

Nah, it's that we all have ideas as to how make reprap better, and how to fulfill our responsibility as responsible . Both Camiel and Casainho.

Ah! Files are up! Excellent.

That closes this particular open loop. Since Casainho's concerns are now addressed, I'll lock the thread and file it away neatly.
