Problems extruding ABS
March 05, 2014 03:58PM
Hi all,
After some dozens of pieces printed with PLA I started working with abs. Apart from warping and leveling problems, quite common, my extruder continously jams, gears turns but filament doesnt get pushed up to hot end. If I try to manually force filament hot end "blobs out" some plastic and then gears start to work again...for 30 seconds. So I am not sure if I have an extrusor or/and an hot end problem. I pushed hot end til 250C.
Any help ?

For starters, read the ABS printing guide here: [reprappro.com]
There's also quite a few threads on here about printing ABS.

I've had this problem too, if you dismantle the extruder and clean the hobbed nut it should start working again. The teeth chip off some abs and this fills the grooves and lubricates it and it slips against the filament( so the gears spin but no filament gets extruded).

For me it only seems to happen if I print at high speed,

ABS should be easier to extrude I think, other than clean your hobbed nut , you can try to increase your hot end temperature a little and see if it works for you.

happy printing !
