Will the drivers on a Duet support a 400 step Nema 17
like this one

Can anyone tell me how many microsteps the drivers on the Duet support.
is there any point in using a 400 Step Nema 17 vs a 200 step one with the Duet?

My delta printer uses 400 step motors. For a given speed, they have a higher back emf than 200 step motors. I had to increase the supply voltage to the Duet to 24V to get travel speeds higher than 150mm/sec.

On a delta printer, 400 step motors provide a small improvement in print quality, mainly because of the improved Z resolution. On a typical Cartesian printer, I think you already have more than enough resolution.

One other advantage of 400 step motors is that they provide nearly double the torque per unit of angular error, for small errors. So more precise positioning in the presence of friction.

I run nearly identical steppers on the D-Box. [rouzeau.net]

mine are 42BYGHM809, 1.7A, 2.8mH . There are told to be 4.8 kg.cm by seller, but I found some manufacturer (Wantai) specifications to be 4.2 kg.cm. The shown datasheet looks modified for torque, so who knows...

I use them on the movement, with current 1.2 A.
I use the same motor for extruder, direct drive, with current 1.5A.
My board have forced cooling and I tested without problem for 45 min 1.6A on the extruder.
This motor is a bit too low torque for direct drive extruder, 6.5 kg.cm would have been preferable, but was not available where I bought it (robotshop).
However, it is largely sufficient for movement (GT2-2 , 16 teeth pulleys).

The only particular point is I had to reduce the 'jerk' and my setup is now :
M566 X1200 Y1200 Z800 E800:800 ; Maximum instant speed changes mm/minute

That's a nice printer!
