Extruder stepper question
August 31, 2012 06:35PM
I'm in the middle of buying parts and putting together a RepRap Huxley, and wanted some input before ordering a motor for the extruder. I'm planning on using a good high-torque Nema 17 stepper, but wondered whether there would be any advantage to using a 400-step motor (0.9 degree per step) versus the typical 200-step (1.8 degree) stepper. My reasoning is that the extruder is the part that would benefit most from a finer amount of control over motor speed, as opposed to a higher maximum speed.

Since this is my first printer project, I'd like to start off with as many of the best parts as I can, and not have to replace too much too soon. Any advice would be most welcome.

Found an answer of sorts on the RepRage blog. If anyone has more or other info, I'd appreciate a post here. The link to the blog post:
