Acrylic non-heated to heated print bed
September 24, 2011 03:41PM
Hello all,

I am currently working on my first Prusa. Currently, I am using acrylic as the print bed material. In the case that somewhere down the road I wish to convert to a heated print bed, will I need to replace the acrylic with some other material such as wood? Or can I clamp the heated bed down on the acrylic directly? Does anyone have experience with this?

Thank you.

I was able to use acrylic to support the Prusa PCB heated bed for printing PLA (bed below 70C) but not for printing ABS (bed above 100C). I think wood (MDF) is commonly used to support the Prusa heated bed with some spacer like cork. Others mount the PCB with standoffs on the Y-plate and put either aluminum or glass plate on top of it.

If you use an aluminum plate with wirewound power resistors for a heat bed, then it supports itself.
