E3D v6 HotEnd and fan Howto connect

Hi
I just had delivery of
E3D v6 HotEnd Full Kit - 3.0mm Direct Genuine E3D
Before I just had the very basic hot end delivered with my Prusa i3 kit
This one has a fan for cooling the extruder. Is it really needed for printing ABS at temp 235 degree ?
Manual say it should connect to power D9 (same as cooling fan power for printarea)
Seems strange to me. If I need cooling of heat sink fan should be on anytime I have power to hot end.
Is best connect to use same as hot end power (D10 power on mine) ?

Also general, must all alu heatsink extruders have cooling fan. Thing is before this new one I had another alu with heat sink that was not delivered with cooling fan.
When I tried to use that one it got clogged up like after some 4-5 meter used filament. Maybe the reason was I had no cooling ... ??

Thanks
BR Bosse

There are three fans

Extruder fan is ALWAYS ON
Electronics fan is ALWAYS ON

Print Fan is controlled by Slicer settings.

I ended up connecting fan in parallell with the extruder heating power
It's working for a starter anyway
I hope this will work also when I've been printing for longer time

Anyway, since I'm nobie on this alu type extruder. Is it true all of them need to have a cooling fan to work proper ?

Hejsan

You need cooling on the cold end because heat from the nozzle will creep up.
Without cooling, you will eventually melt your filament inside the cold end and jam it.

This fan is always ON when printer is ON. If you have a 12V fan, you could also just wire it directly to the 12V PSU. (Same way as Electronics fan is)

Thanks for feedback. So I changed and connected fan to Electronics always ON.
Seem like more safe. I guess I was not thinking through when I decided to connect to extruder heat power.
Since extruder heat go off/on during printing ... but cooling you would like to have always on
