Did you try booting it without an SD card in it? Try that first. If it works without an SD card it could be that there are too many files on it. I have this issue on my printer where it does that. Seeing it is an 8-bit board, that might well be the case. It would work when booting it up without a card, then inserting the card works fine as well, but when booting it with a card IN the machine it causes trouble. I think because the controller loads the file list in advance while booting and its buffer gets overflowed somehow.
