I haven't seen one small enough.

smallest one that I can afford is 1". At $47 from macmaster carr, it's a reliable clamp on solution. That does mean that I have to use a 1" tube. These goes up to 1500'f, an aluminum tube should be ok right? If not then I can make an aluminum sleeve over my existing 1/2' tube.

I've seen quite a few band heaters on Ebay - here's a very inexpensive little 3/4" unit: [cgi.ebay.com]

Problem is all the band heaters out there are for 120V+

I'm looking into getting a run of 12V ones made. All the current heater solutions are pretty bad so something like this has to happen eventually.

I don't see any issues with the resistor-block heaters. They are very cheap too. Even nichrome is fine if done similar to how the makergear hot ends are.

However, a simple clamp-on heater like Have Blue linked to would be nice.

The problem is that they are 1" long. That would give a long melt zone compared to the resistor heater block, which can be only 8mm thick.
