In reading through the instructions for Wade's Geared Extruder

It states that it works with a stepper driver 2.3, but doesn't mention the extruder controller board 2.2.
What gives? Will it work with the normal extruder controller board?

If not do I need to make myself another stepper driver board? Or is there an alternate Extruder that
is meant to work with the standard 2.2 controller?

I use the extruder controller 2.2 on my extruders; it works fine as we don't run the extruders too quickly. More importantly, find a strong stepper; I use a 5 kg*cm Kysan, although it's probably overkill.
