I have made gcode for milling most mendel parts on a 3 axis (with a tiny bit of 4 axis) but it all needs tidying up before it's fit to distribute, because it's all tuned to my machine and mostly it has had compensation for a 3mm endmill hard coded into the toolpaths because I hadn't mastered emc2's compensation at the time. A 4th axis doesn't need to be any more than this A longer shaft on the motor would let you print in layers from the inside out. The only real improvement you'd need is some higher gearing, to get better angular resolution for larger diameters. Thanks for all the kind words Yes it's all CNC milled, on the above machine. It is built pretty much the same as a Wolfstrap, but a fair bit heavier. This set would be going on ebay today, except I think I've been persuaded on IRC to make a matching frog & bed first. This is the first of three sets I've milled. It's all well seasoned wood (oak, pine & some oak plywood) made to the standard STLs, with a Wade's extruder. It's all had several coats of solvent free non toxic varnish.
