I thought I'd share a bit of fun I had last night using my 3DR Simple Delta as a demo unit at the local library: a few months back, the library contacted me and asked if I would stop by to give an 'Introduction to 3D printing' presentation. I thought it was a great idea and it wound up turning out quite well last night. Lots of folks were interested in 3D printing and in particular thought the Deby PierreB - Delta Machines
Quoteumdpru Very nice! I'm quite jealous, actually. Did you have any difficulties calibrating it? What did you use to print the parts in the first place? I had a thought last night that my steps/mm for the three axes could be causing my problems ( I left them at 55.5 default). I calibrated those and everything is very close so that wasn't it. I'm back to waiting to finish printing a new frame.by PierreB - Delta Machines
Quoteumdpru Has anyone gotten their 3dr simple to print well? I see many have them "printing" but how many are dialed in? Mine is printing parts which I'm quite happy with:by PierreB - Delta Machines
Quoteumdpru Hi all, I finally got time to work on my 3DR simple after two months. It's working now. Not perfectly, but making shapes. What are the recommended retraction settings for this machine? I have slic3r configured to retract 3mm at 30mm/s.by PierreB - Delta Machines
QuoteCAD321 I've ordered myslef a QU-BD one up and given its similar build volume to the printrbot simple and low price point, am considering converting it to a 3DR simple. However I am on a budget (as I'm sure many are) and was curious to know what the price would be to upgrade. After looking around I was unable to find a full BOM so I decided to make one in Excel. Quotezacbot Oh!....then I can t imagine the spool getting loose... There are still three players in the mechanism. - The fishing line could be too thight. - The bearing on the top is sometimes blocking. - The smooth rods are not perfectly parallel. This will stop or make it hard for the carriage to move to the top causing the motor to skip and loose steps. This will also explain why the probby PierreB - Delta Machines
Quotezacbot QuotePierreB [*] I seem to be having an intermittent problem with the motor/spool at the rear of the printer. I think it might be that the set screw in the spool keeps working itself loose so the motor shaft is spinning freely inside even though I tightened the setscrew a decent amount. A few thoughts after having printed a handful of things on the Simple Delta: It makes a fair amount of noise when moving the print head around, much noisier than my RRP Mendel or Printrbot Simple was. I think the noise is coming from the LM8UU linear bearings, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyone else experiencing this? The top mounted spool holder is awesome. Has anyone mounted a LCD to their Simplby PierreB - Delta Machines
Realized that my x-axis was mirrored, but that was a quick fix by reversing both the X and Y motor connections along with the X and Y endstop connections. Got a few more test/calibration parts printed and pretty happy with how the early parts are coming along: The Rostock MAX 250mm calibration cylinder scaled down 75% to a 187.5mm cylinder printed pretty well: although there is some kind of reby PierreB - Delta Machines
Quoteumdpru Can someone who has theirs running please attach your Marlin directory and possibly attach their slic3r profile? I'm going to take a liberal definition of the word "running" since no one else has replied yet. Here's my Marlin directory and slic3r profile (I just barely got mine printing tonight! .... kind of...almost...hopefully?): Marlin directory (including the latest .hex file tby PierreB - Delta Machines
There are two items which appear to be missing from the original BOM: 1) a small dowel pin to hold the 608zz bearing in place on the extruder idler - I've been using a piece of plastic tubing just to keep the build going along but I'm at a point now where I want to put the right part in place. Richrap's blog mentions using a M8 x 20mm smooth or threaded rod for this purpose. Anyone know where I cby PierreB - Delta Machines
Just got my replacement Printrboard after my original had the USB port break off and I'm pretty close to printing now, but I'm hitting some snags in getting the firmware right. I've updated the #define MANUAL_Z_HOME_POS (in my case it is near 223.0), but when I start to print the distance between the glass and the nozzle changes pretty significantly (+/- 5mm between the towers). It's alive (finally... please excuse the loose wiring, that'll get tidy'd up this weekend)! Video:by PierreB - Delta Machines
What's the sequence for getting the updated firmware onto the Printrboard? I've got the latest version of Marlin with the necessary modifications, it compiles in the Arduino environment, then what? I've updated the Printrboard with precompiled binaries from Printrbot before which required toggling a jumper pin on the Printrboard, then loading some software to upload the binary. Is that the sequby PierreB - Delta Machines
QuoteJohnSL I've just published Building the 3DR “Simple” Delta Printer, Part III on my blog. I believe I have one final part to publish, which is about installing the firmware and calibrating the printer. RichRap has done a great job, so I can just cover what's specific to this printer. Quotejaydmdigital Doesn't look like it. Ack, looks like I found my problem, I loaded the gcode for that part into pronterface before it was done slicing or slic3r never finished slicing the part because my 'hot end holder with tabs.stl' part is only halfway printed. At least that's an easy fix, thanks for helping to spot the hotend picture above jaydmdigital!by PierreB - Delta Machines
Another quick question (I realize I'm off into what will be part III territory, but I thought I'd ask anyway in case if helps somehow...): should there be a gap between the hot end holder pieces when they are sandwiched around the hot end? I wind up with a 4mm gap once all the screws are tightened as seen in the pictures below. Untitled by Senior Kabong, on Flickr Untitled by Senior Kabong,by PierreB - Delta Machines
More progress: top frame completed, motors, spectra line and glass bed installed. I believe I'm now at the end of part 2 (other than splicing motor wires and installing endstops/controller board)! 3DR Simple Delta by Senior Kabong, on Flickr Since part 3 isn't up yet, can I pick up from Richrap's build instructions or are there substantial differences? I thought I'd share a progress report. I've completed printing all of the main frame pieces and started assembly, although I just ran out of M4 nuts, hence the top frame not being together & bolted in the picture below. I'm hopeful that Home Depot may have some tomorrow otherwise a McMaster order will be placed soon. I printed the frame in ABS and it was a bit of a pain, although this was myby PierreB - Delta Machines
Great post John! I've just started printing the lower frame on my Mendel and plan to order the remaining hardware this week. Looking forward to testing this design out, thanks for all the time and detail you've put into this project thus far!by PierreB - Delta Machines
Just found this thread linked from the Printrbottalk forums and I quite like the idea of repurposing my Simple to build this modified Delta of yours. Looking forward to your updates and building one of these for myself!by PierreB - Delta Machines

Seems like an issue related to repetier-host, although I can't figure out what. I rebooted the computer, tried a new USB cable and neither helped. I switched back to pronterface and it started printing right away. I have seen since weirdness in terms of machine behavior in the last release or two of repetier-host, so I guess I'll mark it up to that for now.by PierreB - General

I've recorded a brief video that shows the stutter occurring right at the start of a print: Homing in x, y and z is smooth, bed heads up fine, hot end heats up fine. I'm guessing there's a loose wire somewhere but I'm not sure where to start or how to troubleshoot something like this. Good news, I'm pretty sure that I found my problem: heat. I always notice that my prints are warm (or hot) to the touch when I take them off the bed, while prints that I would take off the makerbot replicator 2 at work would be cool to the touch immediately when printing was completed. I also remembered reading posts about how active cooling could increase the quality of small parts, so I hauleby PierreB - General

Super excited. Just got my Reprappro tricolor Mendel up (only single color built thus far, other two hot ends and extrusion gears will be built soon...) and working after a ~2 week build (a few hours each night after work) and ran my first prints this afternoon. I was surprised that the only thing I got wrong out of the whole build process was the polarity of the LED on the heated bed (I couldn'tby PierreB - General
