**UPDATE** hey all, right im gonna make it abit more complicated, if i tell the heads to manually move, lets say 50mm, and the head starts to move and i press the endstop switch then the head stops, but when i say move to home postion and the head hits the endstop switch it keeps trying to move and crashes?? how can it work when on manual but not work when moving to home position?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, got a bit of a problem with my newly built prusa mendel, the problem i had was when i told it to move into the home position the heads would move in the opposite direction from the end stops and would crash inless I manually pressed the endstop myself, at which point it would stop, so ive edited the marlin firmware and inverted the direction which the heads move when told to return to theby matrix4721 - Reprappers
great, thanks, i will input those figures into marlin, in relation to calibrating the extruder, how do i go about it? is that calibrated through marlin too? if so how do i do it as i couldnt see it on the calculation page? Kind Regardsby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi thanks for your reply, ive used the calculator and these are the values i get x axis = 80.00 y axis = 80.00 z axis = 2560 does this seem right? as z axis is very different, if its not right how do i work out its correct value? and how do i work out the value of the extruder? kind regardsby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi, thanks for the link, i still cant seem to get my head around it, cant seem to get the right figures using that calculator, im assuming i do have to change the settings in marlin?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, so im very nearly ready to try printing on my newly made prusa mendel but im stuck configuring the marlin software, more specifically the ''define DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNIT''. i just cant get my head round it so any help would be greatly appreciated. im using a T2.5 timing belt with a 16 tooth pulley, im using nema 17 motors with 1.8 degree steppers and 1/16 microstepping. the originalby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Is there a way i can test the diodes? what is diode 2 responsible for? and if its faulty could it cause further damage? i have several new diodes from past projects but is it worth replacing any as the ones that are already attached to the ramps board are new?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, ive tried what shadowram said about removing the diode on the ramps board and powering it from both the USB and the 12v input and its working again, aside from needing the USB being connected all the time are there any downsides to doing it this way? btw im using the gadgets3d lcd ramp w/sd card, i would consider buying another arduino board however seeing how its blown the voltage regulaby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, thanks for your replies, i have good news and bad news, good news is that i was able to borrow a mega 2560 board from a friend of mine and everything worked, the display worked fine under both USB and 12v, it worked for about 30 minutes and then popped with aload of smoke, i disconnected the power and removed the arduino board to discover it had blown a small hole in the larger voltage reby matrix4721 - Reprappers
yeah its defo a weird fault, ive tried connecting it in multiple ways, usb first, then 12v, 12v, then usb, results have been the sameby matrix4721 - Reprappers
where would i attach the 5v to the ramps board? the main power inputs are 12v?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Right okay, i'll order a voltage regulator and attempt to repair the board, so am i right in assuming that when the regulator is working correctly (powered by the usb) it should have multimeter readings on both the input and output pins?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
okay forgive me if this sounds stupid, im trying to teach myself electronics as we go, right, if im correct, looking down at the voltage regulator you see 3 pins, the left pin is input, middle pin is ground, right pin is output, if i measure the input and ground pins i get 4.88v, if i measure the ground and output i get 0vby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Just checking it now, if i use the earth on the left pin and and check the other test probe on the middle/right/top pins i get 4.88v, if i try any other combo i get 0v, does that sound right?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
How would i go about finding that out? im guessing id using a multimeter to check the pins of the voltage regulator?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
That might not be a bad idea, ive seen ''2 x SMD SMT LM1117 AMS1117 Voltage Regulator 5V 800mA'', would they do the trick?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hey shadowram, thanks for your help, so your saying that by accidently connecting the endstops to the bottom set of pins (+5v rail) that it actually damaged the arduino board and not the ramps board? if thats the case then im lucky you spotted it cos i nearly ordered another ramps board, its a shame cos the arduino still works and accepts code but obviously the part that connects to the ramps boaby matrix4721 - Reprappers
BTW on the picture of the ramps board you'll see where the endstops connect to has 3 rows, i think the endstops connect to the top 2 rows and i think i connected them to the bottom 2 rows, as the error occured as the head touched the endstop im guessing its shorted something, but not knowing what the bottom row of pins were for im not sureby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi, thanks for the reply, ive attached afew photos of the boards and how it responds when the 12v is attached and when its not, i'll broken out the multimeter but so far everything seems to be okay on the ramps board, if anyone spots something ive missed or have any suggestions on what i can check feel free to shout outby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Ive looked at the board and i cant see any burnt components on it, i tried reconnecting the power and this time no smoke, the arduino board is detected by the computer still but then says 'device failed to start' whenever i connect the 12v supply to the ramps board, is there any way i can test the arduino and ramps boards to see which is working and which isnt? if i can identify which one is theby matrix4721 - Reprappers
**UPDATE** Just tried powering the ramps board without the endstops/stepper drivers/steppers/heatbed/heatbed attached and noticed some smoke, I pulled the power straight away but I couldn't tell where the smoke came from, I removed the ardunio board and tested that separately and that still works so the smoke must have come from the ramps board, any idea what might be smoking?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi, im using mechanical endstops, ive tried powering the board without the endstops but it does the same thing, I doubled checked and I think I wired the endstops a row to low, the diagram I was working off showed 2 rows of pins on the board but my ramps board has 3 rows of pins with the bottom row have a + symbol on it, not sure if that's whats happenedby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, im in desperate need of your talents, so ive finshed building my prusa mendel, hooked up the ramps 1.4 with LCD and the ardunio, uploaded the firmware, the LCD lit up with the temps etc, opened up pronterface and connected to the printer, no problem, tested all the motors and everything moved as it should, looking good, told it to go to the home position and as soon as it hit the end stopby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi all, Ive nearly completed my first prusa mendel, im using RAMPS 1.4 with marlin firmware and have the LCD hooked up to the ramps board but cant seem to get the LCD to work, the RAMPS board definitely works as i can move the motors etc but the screen lights up and displays a row of blocks then a blank row then another row of blocks and another blank row, im guessing its firmware related, anby matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hi, thanks for your reply, turned out it was my fault, i thought i was being smart by placing the board on an anti static bag for protection, didnt realise that those bags are conductive, i ditched the bag and it works a treatby matrix4721 - Reprappers
HI, thanks for your replies, ive connected the power and nothing popped which is very good, there is a heart beat light the flashes however there are 2 leds that seem to flicker on and off in line with the heatbeat, however they seem to come on / off when the board is moved, how many leds are supposed to be blinking when power is applied?by matrix4721 - Reprappers
Hey all, so all my electronics have arrived and just want to double check something with you, ive connected the PC Power supply to the ramps board with the +12V (yellow wire) and Ground (Black Wire) for both the 11a and 5a terminals, my question is, is this correct? im unsure about the amps bit, providing ive used the +12v and ground from the pc atx power supply in the correct polarity is it safeby matrix4721 - Reprappers
"Hi all, I've nearly completed building my own prusa Mendel the only thing left to buy is the hot end, but I've hit a snag, I'm wanting to use 1.75mm filament and have figured on using a nozzle size of 0.20mm(hopefully for better quality) so that bits sorted, the only issue is when I try to buy one its asking me what PTFE insulator size I want and gives me the choice ranging from 12mm to 20mm, anby matrix4721 - Reprappers
