This is really just a heads-up for anyone encountering issues with Octoprint + smoothie. If Octoprint is set to issue 'M21' (initialise SD card) smoothie responds with "!!" and Octoprint flags an error and terminates coms. Setting octoprint to ignore error messages doesn't fix it, as smoothie responds to subsequent 'G' codes with "!!" too (this looks like a bug). Weirdly 'M' codes still seem toby twospoons - Smoothie
So I restarted from scratch, building a new OS image for the Pi, based off the Octopi image, adding TouchUI as I did before. Only this time it all works. Perhaps the difference is that I had the smoothieboard plugged in the whole time while I was setting everything up ( and boot testing ) so maybe something secret got set up that wasn't there before. I guess it will remain a mystery because I doby twospoons - Smoothie
I hear everything you are saying, and it all makes sense (and I personally don't think for one second you need less options!). I understand how hard it is to create a guide when there are so many printer variants. Maybe the real answer is "If you don't understand this stuff, go buy an off-the-shelf printer". Is that too harsh? Perhaps one or two example smoothie builds (one cartesian, one deltaby twospoons - Smoothie
Maybe an 'Idiots guide to Smoothieboard' is what some folks are looking for. A nice well defined example of how to set up the hardware and a matching config file to go with it. Smoothie is wonderfully configurable from my point of view (I'm an EE so its all pretty easy for me), but I guess there are plenty of people for whom having options just leads to confusion, as its not always obvious what tby twospoons - Smoothie
No, its a real smoothie board. X3, but I added two extra motor drives. I got dicked by some a-hole on Ebay - posted a pic of the X5, and send me an X3. At least I only paid the X3 price. USB cable is 0.5m, the shortest one I could get. And as I said, everything has its own wires back to the 5V supply. I don't think this is a supply issue.by twospoons - Smoothie
I'm trying to run my smoothieboard from a rpi 3, with Octoprint. It all runs just fine if I boot the pi first, then connect the smoothieboard via usb. If I try to boot the pi with smoothieboard already connected, the boot process crashes and the pi sits there doing nothing. After the crash disconnecting the smoothieboard results in a message that a USB device has been unplugged, but nothing elseby twospoons - Smoothie
From a first timer setup point of view it would be nice to have a larger set of basic configuration guides to take you through the process. Some info specific to certain configurations is in footnotes, and easily missed. I found the delta guide pretty good, though it would be nice if it had a concise step checklist, in the order in which things need to be set up and tested. Similar guides for vaby twospoons - Smoothie
