About me

Reprap experience

  • 10/14/11: We have the Huxley and a Mendel mostly working. We have had 5 hot-ends fail in various ways. We have 10 weeks of experience, but not much productivity. I am astounded at the immaturity of the vendor support base for Reprap. Of course, things are moving fast and changing weekly.
  • 08/26/11: Got the hot end working reliably - but found out the material we got was ABS - not PLA. So we have been having trouble with warping and material not sticking to the bed. PLA is on order.
  • 08/11/11: Still working on adjusting the z-axis and figuring out what tool chain to use. We did get plastic onto the bed, but the purge is not happening in the right place. We got 2 layers put down on one print then stopped the machine.
  • 08/05/11: Yeah, um, no first print today. Still assembling the Mendel and the Huxley. The Huxley is getting close: the extruder is being built today. The Mendel is about 75% Mechanically complete.
  • 08/02/11: Received a Huxley and a Mendel kit from Techzone yesterday. We started building and at the end of the second day, we have the mechanical subsystems on the frame. Not yet trued and no motors installed yet. The parts are adequate, but a few needed adjustments. I come from a background where we design for manufacturability - so far, the Huxley isn't as manufacturable as we would hope. A set of jigs for setting distances would help a lot and reduce build time by a few hours for new builders. Don't get me wrong - we are having a great time and love the machine. We are hoping for first print by Friday.
  • 07/28/11: Working on building my first machine as part of a larger effort at my company. I got the first half of the printed parts off our large industrial FDM machine today. Currently working to ID recycled parts for the machine from a large stockpile of A3 size laser printers. Have two kits on order from Techzone Communications - a Mendel and a Huxley. Experience from those will be used to refine the process and build more.

More info to come.
