Is the thermal barrier actually needed by the extruder? I mean, couldn't you just have an open air gap between the heater and the, well, rest of the extruder? So, why not "suspend" the heater in mid air?

You'll probably find that the filament buckles between the drive and the heater.

I was thinking that, but shouldn't that be reduced if i decreased the distance between them?

The molten plastic will flow backwards and spill out of the gap.
