H-bridge chip selection

Hi, I am new with the stepper motor interfacing circuits and I was looking online and came across quite a few. I just wanted to know whether I should be aware of any issues with using an Allegro UDN2988 H-bridge chip to drive a bi-polar stepper motor using a PIC 16F84 microcontroller.

Correction : thats UDN 2998

It should work with a 5V PIC but it will only give full or half stepping constant voltage drive. If you are using this for a RepRap you will want microstepping and constant current drive.

It is also classed as obsolete by the manufacturer.

Can you please suggest any alternative ICs that i can instead

Most repraps use modern Allegro chips like A4988 but, because it is surface mount, tend to buy them ready mounted: [www.pololu.com].

Those that prefer to solder their own or want a bit more current use the Toshiba TB6560AHQ but it has some nasty power cycling requirements that most people ignore.
