Extruding 3mm pla/abs with non-geared extruder?

Is anyone having success extruding 3mm abs and pla with a non-geared extruder using a fairly ordinary nema17 stepper and a nozzle in the 0.4 to 0.5mm area? My mk8 clone with some modifications can't and I'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to push the design a bit further or if I should move directly to a geared extruder.

I have done this with a 60mm Nema 17 stepper motor, Mk8 drive gear, and an original J-head with a 0.5mm nozzle. It worked okay at for simple prints that did not have many retraction moves, but it would skip steps if you pushed it too far by making too many direction changes too quickly. It probably all depends on what you're printing and just how fast you want to print it. I have since gone back to using typical Wade's geared extruders.
