Printing Direct to Unheated Glass

I have a glass build plate that i have blue tape on. The tape leaves a somewhat messy look to the bottom.

Are there any treatments you can give unheated glass? I dont want to add a heated build plate.

-Nick

EDIT: I am printing PLA at 188 degrees C

You can try PVA glue diluted with water, but IME it's not sufficient to bond to unseated glass.

Where can one get PVA glue (in the US)?

I've tried PVA glue on a cold bed and not had good luck. It makes PLA stick fantastically on a heated bed though.

Some people have had luck with it on a cold bed though, since it's so cheap it might be worth a try.

As mentioned, PVA glue is just plain white glue, such as Elmer's.

yeah when using pva glue when its heated it becomes slighty tacky thats what makes the prints stick so good.

hence when you cool it it normally pops off quite good.

I saw someone using hairspray. I think it was on a heated bed with Kapton, but it might be worth a shot.

I have heard of people simply using a blow dryer or hot lamp on the plate for a few minutes before starting the print.

Sounds simple enough, and I can imagine it may work.

www.reprapdiscount.com Sells cheap hot beds.

They are Hong Kong based, and their stuff while not "Amazing Quality" has not failed to work for me yet.

Everything I have picked up from them so far has indeed functioned as advertised.

(it did take me a frustrating day to figure out their stepper drivers need a 0.1 volt reference voltage though)

The issue with that is as the bed cools during the print, there is a very good chance the print will detatch from the bed.

Ive tried hairspray. It was Dove somthing, idk if other kinds might work.

The reason I dont want to do a heat bed is mainly cost, time (Busy with school), and I would also need a new power supply.

Then IMO you're pretty much stuck with Blue Tape

I do know there are a few varieties of blue tape, with different "Finishes". Is it the tape itself that makes the adhesion, or the semi-rough surface of it?

Thiss has potential for the print to pop off the plate, poly was right. Lapse of judgement on my part.

Maybe it would be ok on a stationary bed design printer... But still risky, the nozzel could hit the print and it flys off the plate.

You can try rubber ruler and compress as much surplus water as possible. Leave it to dray as it will take several hours deoebdubg on humanity in air.

tape down the sides of a sheet of printer paper, and turn up the temp of the first layer +10-20 if needed.
I did it here [www.youtube.com]

Edit: Chinese PLA used here with great success : )
