I agree and that is why a lot of companies are moving to Vietnam which is the next new slave market to pillage.

You go live in a cave then because with 90%, or more, of everything coming from China you don't have a viable choice.

Yes, I have argued this point but RepRap is not just about useless anything else you consider the medical field and their use of RepRaps for all sorts of stuff (including using living tissue for grafting) useless. I do agree most common people use it to fill our trash heaps and dumps up with more bric-a-brac and what-nots then should be allowed.

I think the article is only accounting for the price of components.

And regardless, I'd be wary of "factory price" breakdowns like that, because they almost *never* include indirect costs.
A product's cost includes marketing costs, customer support costs, the costs of upkeep and managing the sales points, service costs, heck, even transport costs.

None of those are ever accounted for in articles like that.

Nope, and I have found the pricing in articles like that to be, more times than not, incorrect as in they are about 20-50% over what the real cost is. Been in companies and laughed as I read an article like that while I am sitting in my chair reading a BOM, lol. This is why I thought that was including labor but when you read the article it isn't so I am not so sure if we should even believe it.

I lay odds it is in the ball park (one the size of the Grand Canyon) but not something to cast down in stone and as time moves forward it will get less expensive but that article will remain the same. :/

But see, my point was that the price of a product does not consist solely of the price of its BOM.
You could be laughing in your chair, while an accountant might be turning gray in his winking smiley

(although yes, BOMs in an article like that one usually are too low an estimate - for the BOM - because they fail to account for special arrangements and deals many companies have with suppliers and contractors)

I think bobc sums it up well, looking at the video they seem to be saying that things are changing but nobody
knows where it will finish up, I could feel the wind of change when bfb sold out to 3Dsystems and I've had
a sinking feeling ever since.
I think companies will try to play it both ways, OS/OH, then closed when it suits them, the question is,
will this deter developers.

My point was that the quoted prices in the articles I have read are not matching the prices I see listed on my BOM and they are off by a landslide.

Two wrongs (in the plus direction and the minus direction) rarely make a right winking smiley
I put in open source and reprap and got a thread saying makerbot were lying about being open source. Couldn't read the original though.
