Grow up.

Fact is that is where the designers of a lot of the stuff you use hang out. Basically the ones who want searches, etc... are the idiot babies who have grown up with everything being fed to them. Frankly I prefer talking directly to the designers and the people who are getting things done than to have some stupid ass web site throw crap at me. Get it from the horse mouth.

Just remeber all of this is free to you so take what you get and like it or shove off.

So this afternoon I uploaded my new printer onto Thingiverse, GrabCad and Cubehero.

OB1.4 on Thingiverse
Thingiverse ironically is getting harder to use now with all the crap they plastered over the front page making it hard to find the upload button, plus you still need to upload each file one at a time.

OB1.4 on Cubehero
Cubehero was not as bad as I was expecting with alternatives offered if you didn't want to go through loading onto Github but it still is very limited and only allows a small description and makes it difficult to add any instructions (I didn't manage to do this).

OB1.4 on GrabCad
GrabCad was the fastest and for me was the easiest to use. It made it very easy to upload all files in one hit and allows you to have project names with dots "." and spaces in it. GrabCad has some very nice features like 3D renderings that are able to be rotated in their viewer.

I will leave the printer on all three and see what happens next.

Keep us updated on how it goes.

Really, all we need is an Opensource Thingiverse clone. I mean a 100% clone then tweak the bad stuff (no Discus) out and replace it with good stuff and we would all be happy.

What about Githubiverse as mentioned earlier?

Quote

drop this into the gh-pages branch of any github project, add a little configuration, and your github pages will display the source files, STLs and any images, along with some other information. The beauty here is that the content is dynamically pulled from the github repository so it is always up to date.

And, I don't need a thingiverse clone... I just need github to have better search tools. :-)

Github sucks. It really sucks and is NOT user friendly at all while Thingiverse used to be and this is one of the biggest reasons so many people use it. Give github an interface like Thingiverse had and it would rock but as it stands now it doesn't.

Never design a site like a programmer programs because the masses will dislike it. Afterall this is one of the goals of all of this is to get it to the masses and having a user friendly site like Thingiverse is at the top of the list in achieving that goal.

But it is good for GPL work. It may not be user friendly but it is the perfect back end to support what so many of you do.

All we need is a proper front end site, that can reference github, while providing the easy user interface you know is important to popularity.

Thanks for your mature response Dark Alchemist - about what I would expect from your other posts. Strangely those who want to search aren't the spoon fed babies as they don't have to ask for help each time if the question has been previously raised / solved. Yes I appreciate it's free and I appreciate that I can just decide to go elsewhere as we all can... ofc if that happens then the critical mass disappears .....

Exactly. As a backend it is wonderful but we need a front end to appease the mom, and pops or basically the average consumer we were supposed to want in our midst.

Critical mass? How can you have that which you don't already have?

They are spoon fed babies because they refuse to have a one on one conversation and instead just want to detach themselves. Basically they are wanting to take and not give which this movement has never ever been about. I don't really give a damn how you see it but the fact is getting on irc is as simple as clicking the irc button on the front page. They don't want to give their time and input via a two way communication system that has so many people to instantly help you but instead want to wander around a web site searching like a bunch of cockroaches.

Sure, a search is nice but get on the irc and participate not just suck off the teet never really being a part of the movement. I know, I know, many just want to take but that is what Thingiverse is for.

Basically your crap attitude response "irc is just a stream of chat that is unsearchable and also unrecorded - that's why it's such an excellent choice for communication sad smiley " that you did got one right back at ya. I suppose irl you expect the real world, you know when you commincate with your mommy, daddy, boss, SO, etc..., to have search features on every person's heads or that everything is recorded too?

A great advantage of IRC is the "ignore" feature, it would be really useful to have that here too to filter out some of the idiot posters.

Maybe with the revamping that is being talked about on IRC for this place we can get that feature because you would definaitely be on it for several people I talk to. Fact is not many I know even come on the forums because they can get instant help on irc, you know when they need it, and not wait around for someone to 'grace' their thread "whenever".

You see, I deliberately didn't mention any names, but you go right ahead and make it personal. It seems you can't comment on anything without abusing someone. That is really the sort of poster everyone can do without. I mean seriously, fuck off.
Re: Thingiverse "New" queue

the IRC channel is great. I've popped in a couple times. Very helpful, and well-known people in there.

I've gotta be honest, reading though this thread (and the other thingivers threads here) you can almost guess who's using Windows and who's using Linux/GNU...

This is an open source movement, and it is available to everyone. You just have to know where to look.

Thingiverse was not something I needed to get into this hobby, that's for sure.... Didn't use it once until I got bored and wanted something fun to print.

I for one don't really care to hear from anyone that something "isn't easy enough"...

Open source isn't always easy, but it's always open to you which is worth so much more.

They don't allow that as most places don't. Sort of like how a lot of businesses use user counts for selling to advertisers even though they aren't active accounts.

Yeah, unlike you I tell it like it is while you stab people in the back and use innuendo instead of just saying what you mean. You are the absolutely worst kind of person to exist (just like a politician) because, unlike you, people know where I stand while you are the type to lie, steal, or cheat to get what you want (you sure you are not in the government?).

So, eff off to you too.

You are allowed to change your user name once on Thingiverse so if you have not already you should use that one time to change your name to something they will have to delete because it goes against their rules. I deleted all my stuff many many many months ago and switched my name to saynotomakerbot and it resulted in my empty user being followed by Bre and Marty to make sure I did not cause any issues by posting negative things against makerbot.

Are you able to build such a site? If so please let me know, I do have an interest in building a site like thingiverse but lack the skill. The problem is that it costs money to setup and run a site like thingiverse, how do you fund it without alienating your audience?

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse at Thingiverse...

It looks like sponsored product placement is the new income stream, Nokia on Thingiverse.

Can it get any worse?

Nokia released that for free the other day. I dunno, I think it's a nice nod to the 3D printing community.

I used to bash on Microsoft except for Windows 2000 and Windows 7 but their biggest turds were WinME (Windows Millennium) and now Windows 8. Cool thing is, or so I have heard, that since Ballmer took over and Gates took his leave Microsoft has been in the red. In reality Windows 8 they completely catered for touch screen machines (for them W8 is a wonderful) while no longer caring about desktops BECAUSE they make a tablet and a phone. If those two devices fail, like Zune did, Microsoft will go bankrupt. The govt will bail them out since they are too big to fail and the vicious cycle will continue.

Poop on Microsoft.
