Recommend me a laser cutter

Is there a project that's similar to reprap in resourcefulness of info, as inexpensive (below the 700's $$$), DIY and open source of a laser cutter? Main objective being to be able to precisely cut mdf and acrylics. Or perhaps do you recommend a milling machine that can later be adapted with a laser or even waterjet?

Open to suggestions and any sort of info, thanks in advance.

Shipping is often a big cost in getting hold of a laser cutter, so it depends where you are. There are a whole bunch of cheap laser cutters on ebay, which are probably the quickest way to get the basic mechanism, and it is relatively easy to add your own control system.
