Ultimate filament
June 02, 2013 06:42PM
Hi everyone

I was wondering what the best filament would be.
Does the ultimate filament already exist or how should the ultimate filament perform?
Are there some neat feature you would like you filament to have?

Best regards
Groenborg

I have seen some amazing videos of the nylon 618.

And those who coloured it makes it look really good. And its a lot flexible.

The nylon filament is quite cool and you can get a great effect when it's coloured.
Do you know about the Arnitel Eco - shore 40-D 1.75 filament? It should be a quite soft plastic and could be very useful.

I think a saw something about some kind of wood filament somewhere... but I can't find it again

Thank you Viktor!
Do you know any other cool filaments? I'm quite new to the 3d printing world...

... search for 'glow in the dark' and elastic filaments and 'taulman nylon' - there were some experiments with other plastics too, but ABS and PLA are the most common and reliable materials ...

I much doubt it exists, not to say that it isnt possible for one material to be better on all counts, but there are lots of properties that can be useful. A table with the properties could probably show it well, but i dont have the inclination to make one. I think PLA is rigid, biodegradable, potentially replab+farm-manifacturable and relatively easy to use, but a bit brittle, ABS and Nylon are more flexible but less rigid.(of course with 3dp -in-principle, if there is room- you can bulk up parts of design as needed)

Marketing plug: my filament is an harder flavour of nylon :-)

What is the most important property or properties for a filament?
No shrink.. Biodegradeable.. Flexible.. Rigid.. Softness...
Or is it better to choose different properties and more materials. Obviously you can't get all specs in one filament.

... it all depends on the application you're aiming on - stiffness/rigidity, wear, surface finish, colour/transparency, and so on ...

For different needs I'm using and building+equipping different machines from CNC-mills over different 3D-printers (FDM, paste, UV-resin) to laser-materialprocessing (engraving/cutting, sintering, moulding).

So it's not only the material in question, but much more the methode, machine or technology, what's interesting winking smiley

You are definitely right, but at the moment I don't have a CNC-mill or laser cutters (I wish I had).
I was more in the thinking of a softer material for making watertight seals. Maybe a hose connector of some sort where you would have a soft seal and a hard shell around it. Could be cool with a 2 extruder system.
