I'm dialing in my Rerap Mendel. I'm running Marlin with the base config (MB=33). My first print started out ok, but on the 3rd or 4th layer it all balled up on the heat end.
What needs tweaked? stepper motor(s), configuration.h or both?
What material are you printing with? Is your hot end tube cooled with a fan? Does it look like too much material was coming out of the nozzle, or that the mechanical positioning of the head was wrong?
